Welcome to The Cauldron Chronicles, a written-based podcast where we evoke Cerridwen’s magickal cauldron of inspiration and transformation. Here, we blend wisdom, stories, and sacred practices to guide you on your journey of self-discovery and growth. Together, let’s stir the cauldron and see what truths rise to the surface.
A couple of months ago while washing our largest pot after dinner my fiancé looked at me and said, "We need to get a new sink." We have one of those double sinks where there's a wall between the two sinks, and an old, low faucet with nothing fancy about it. It sucks anytime we need to wash, well, anything. Rather than washing you just end up banging around the pot and making a gigantic watery mess like a kid after a bubble bath except no fun was had. We decided we'd take care of it in December during his vacation and with the addition of a water filtration system that a friend told us about.
Thanks to Black Friday, the filtration system was $30 off so we decided to buy it early. What the hell!?It's Black Friday, maybe we can snag a deal on a kitchen sink too and so we decided to go browse at Lowe's. The one that initially caught our eye was perfect even though it wasn't on sale. We liked that the drain was off to the side but then we realized how that could pose a challenge under our sink. We both acknowledged that our intuitions were saying, "No. That's not the one." We started to leave when we spotted another one with a center drain. Not only was it on sale but it was on sale at the same price as the other one we liked. Both of our intuitions said to go for it, so we did.
Having never replaced a sink in his life, my fiancé had quite a project on his hands and he decided now was the time to do it too rather than waiting until December. I was not envious. The project began and just as quickly came to a halt. Having gotten the sink completely off and the faucet removed, he took the new faucet out of the box only to realize the plumbing elements were a complete mismatch. He decided unfortunately that it was time to call a plumber. We spent maybe 30 minutes scouring the internet and asking friends for recommendations but everyone we called couldn't make it out here for days if at all. "I think maybe it's the Universe telling you that you don't need anyone else. You can do it." So, with no other option, we headed back to Lowe's to see if we could find some kind of adapter.
Another 30 minutes or so down the drain staring at adapters but none were exactly what we needed and the only employee in sight who seemed to know about plumbing was a staff member currently being held hostage by a very loud woman with her own project that required some additional insight. With bagel breakfast sandwiches to pick up and our son from work, it was time to go home and strategize some more. On our way to get our online order for breakfast, I decided it was a good opportunity to pray. "Angels, please show us what we're missing." And I let it go. We picked up our sandwiches, our son called and was getting a ride home from work, and so we headed back home to our sinkless kitchen.
Because our kitchen was in shambles, we stood side by side at the edge of the counter, quietly eating our breakfast and looking at all of the pieces and parts scattered around us. Just then my fiancé noticed a large silver envelope that hadn't yet been opened. We looked at each other. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? He opened it and inside were two additional hoses with ends that matched EXACTLY what we needed. We agreed that we now understood why we didn't find a plumber or the parts we needed at Lowe's because, well, WE DIDN'T NEED THEM! Just as I had presumed.
The craziest part about this is that these extra parts we needed came with the water filtration system - not the sink or the faucet we purchased. Even crazier than that is that these parts don't appear on the box or directions as being parts that come with the system and yet, here they were. I told my fiancé that I prayed to our angels on the way home and asked them to show us what we were missing and boy did they ever. He thanked them in his disbelief and the sink is being replaced as I speak.
The reason I decided to share this story isn't just to show the external power of prayer - though come on, that was pretty impressive, right? The external power of prayer is obvious and doesn't really require a lot of discussion. What often doesn't get discussed, however, in terms of prayer, is one's relationship to the act of praying and the internal power it can have for the one that does it. Many witches, me included, come from religious backgrounds where prayer has been used as a religious tool rather than a spiritual tool. It comes with rules and regulations, how-tos, and a lot of structure - not to mention you're praying to the big guy in the sky in which most of us witches don't believe. Therefore, when I left religion and became a witch, I lost my relationship with the meaning of many things like God, angels, and prayer simply because I associated them only with religion. What I've had to learn as a witch is how to redefine those terms and acts in new ways that support my spiritual path and belief system of choice rather than omitting them or rejecting them and assigning them only to religious paths.
Prayer, believe it or not, is brand new to me again and is something I am currently working on redefining for myself. For me, I am choosing for prayer to play a casual, fun, and magickal role in my life. By praying whenever, wherever, and however, I allow myself to be creative, to be playful, and to have a constant open line of communication with the Divine and with my personal team of angels and guides. I love having ritual and prayer at my altar, but I also love the adventure of prayer that has no rules. Prayer is YOUR communication with YOUR link to the Divine and so it should be your own style. May it be a source of empowerment and joy.
I'd love to hear from those witches that also have religious backgrounds. How did your relationship with prayer change when you became a witch? What role does prayer have in your spiritual path now? If you stopped praying - like I did - what role do you want prayer to have in your life now? How can you redefine it? Leave your answers in the comment! For those of you that do not come from a religious background, what is your relationship with prayer? Could it use some enhancement?
I encourage you to start praying today. Say hi to your angels and guides, ask for what you need like help fixing the kitchen sink, and ALWAYS be sure to offer your gratitude when they come through for you. I usually give mine a "Woooo!" when they show off their magickal powers and come through for me, and I believe they love when I cheer for them too. Prayer doesn't need to be quiet - let's make it contagious!
That about wraps us up for this episode of The Cauldron Chronicles. Remember, every step into self-awareness is a step toward wholeness into your highest, most magickal self. Leave a comment and share your questions or thoughts!
Until next week! Blessed be!
