Last night my fiance and I went to dinner at the home of someone who means a lot to me. This person was my witchy mentor when I first entered into witchcraft and I am extremely grateful for her wisdom and knowledge along the way. So now here I am thinking about how it all started, and how having a reliable source for guidance into such unknown territory can make a world of difference.
Right off the bat, my witchy mentor had me get a copy of Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft as my starting place for gaining a foundation of knowledge about witchcraft. I found this book to be extremely helpful. The content is based on the Wiccan path - I am not Wiccan - but the information it contains is still applicable and relevant. Additionally, one of my favorite aspects of being a witch is not having to conform to any specific path but rather being able to create my own with elements of various paths in whichever way feels and works best for me. This is why it's considered a craft as it is created and practiced in order to become what it is. That being said, as you read through this or any other witchcraft book, it's important to pay attention to how new information feels to you. If something doesn't resonate, leave it go. When you notice something that clicks, however, explore it and incorporate it into your unique path if it feels right.
Now that I am much more seasoned in my craft, I would personally recommend a second book to pair with Buckland's, and that would be Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig. Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft covers a lot of the ritualistic elements and belief systems in witchcraft but Modern Magick dives way deep into the magickal aspects of it. And let's face it, who doesn't come into witchcraft feeling extremely curious and excited about the magick? What's important to know right off the bat about magick is that it requires consistent practice, documenting your experiences, and more in order to tap into your personal power and strengthen it so your magick produces desired results and doesn't just fall flat. Being a witch is truly an every day lifestyle and only for those truly serious and devoted to the path. What Modern Magick will do for you is introduce you to the foundations and practices of Magick so you not only have your foundational knowledge of rituals and belief systems, but also a foundational knowledge of performing actual magick and how it works so you can integrate the two and begin defining your unique craft as a witch.
Well, there you have it. If you are new to witchcraft or are curious and want to know more, check out Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland and Modern Magick by Donald Michael Craig on Amazon and begin your journey into witchcraft!
